“Look at me.”

The plea was followed with further attempts to meet his eyes, a task that many would have considered undesirable. For, as one man had described prior to being shot, the notion of a human with gold eyes was frightening. Set against dark hair and drawn features, they looked unnatural and some assumed they were, the work of acquired dyes.

The infant was put into his arms unceremoniously without some sense of joy at the occasion. Jango was simply left with a child while the Kaminoans retreated, seeing their purpose for being in the room completed.

And Jango preferred it that way. The child in his arms was smaller than he imagined, but maybe, he thought, that was the way children were supposed to be. Little experience with children had caused him several times during the process to reconsider his decision. He knew so little of them, how to be around them, how to handle them, how to talk to them. It was a frightening concept that something so small could be so foreign and terrifying.

It was steady, slow and silent.

His fingers ran over the switches, flicking this and that, corners of his lips twitching into a smirk when the engines roared with life. The familiarity of humming that rose through the switches and controls brought a childish sense of joy to him.

He was home.

Had he known, maybe he would have acted different. He might have been kinder, more forgiving. Yet, there could be no changing of the past, merely adding to the list of regrets that he already kept.

He hated the man for never speaking of the matter, for treating it as though it was of no concern. And, yet, it was. The man had gone from sitting, laughing, smiling to suddenly laying in bed, dying slowly. He was growing weaker, his voice becoming softer. He was less formidable, less threatening, the illness eating away everything that had made him distinguishable from the man he’d once been.

He walked the hallways of Kamino, enclosed by large windows beading in the downpour. It was a planet of water and only that. Cities rose out of the water on their stilts, no dry land to be seen aside from what was constructed. And to step outside meant one risked the possibility of drowning merely by standing there, rain always falling , as though it intended to fill the oceans and swallow back the cities.

He was quiet, hands fumbling with a glass, trying in vain to remain steady as he poured tihaar. Pain coursed through his spine, searing his nerves. His hand shook and alcohol splashed over, staining metal counters. With the glass half full, he hastily set the bottle of tihaar aside, and drank.

There was no criticism at finding him drinking, not this time. “They did good,” he said, bracing against the counter while Vau picked through a medical kit he had scavenged. In the final hours of destruction of their home, of their family, he had seen them all away, Ordo taking command, giving orders coming as second nature.

They had too much at stake to stand and fight.

Between them it was difficult to discern the villain.

There stood the one man, born of rage and raised in purgatory. He watched with distrusting eyes, remembering too well the show that his father put on for the public, knowing too well how easy it was to lie. How many times had his father called him insolent, said he earned every blow? And how often had his mother comforted him after, refusing to stand up to his father, always having watched the before? How many times had he felt betrayed by her, swore she lied through her teeth when she said she was sorry? He had grown distant, understanding that survival could only be accomplished without feeling. To be numb ensured survival.

"At least they trust me with the children," Kal said, glancing at Vau.

The taller man shrugged. “Ordo?”

the end

The resolution of war called for celebration, cheers and tears of joy. It was supposed to be seen as the best of solutions, the belief that everyone had come to their senses and had realized the error of their ways.

And, yet, Kal struggled to celebrate a war that had been won in engineered men’s blood.

If the men had been given a choice, if they had been allowed to decide to fight, Kal would have been among the masses cheering the end of war—even if it came at the cost of an established empire—drinking the free liquor and being grateful that a galaxy at war had at least reached some kind of resolution.

They fell in the hundreds, quite possibly the millions.

Yet, no one blinked.

It was as though they were broken things, easily replaced and not worth the worry. Oh, the ones who were merely wounded, still carried life in them, could react and scream that they weren’t dead were carted off, taken to be healed. Yet, the ones who crumpled to their knees, last breath more like a final sigh, were left in place. Almost serving as their own monuments in death to the short life they lived.
